Grummore - Altnaharra

Grummore - a members only Caravan club site situated in the Highlands of Scotland and my favourite site. Ideal for a complete de-stress away from the rush of modern life, brilliant for fishing, walking and bird watching.

It is sited on northern shore of Loch Naver looking over to Ben Klibreck. Fly fishing for the native Brown Trout is free from the site or you can hire a boat and go further a field. Bird watching from the site is fantastic, over 70 species of birds have been reported on the site although my personal tally is "only" 54.

There are no shops or petrol nearby so come well prepared and stocked. The wardens do carry a limited stock of essentials. But no off-sales :-)

So what is the attraction. At any time of year this site has something to offer. The hill walking varies from gentle strolls to full blown Munros. The wildlife and bird life is never the same from one visit to the next. I was there recently to be awoken in the early hours by a noise outside. On lifting the blind I found I was surrounded by deer that had come down from the hills.

The main attraction for me is the fishing. However as is the norm on Scottish lochs the wild trout do not all grow big. But a small wild brown trout on light tackle beats a stocky rainbow anyday in my book. Saying that my best fish on Loch Naver is a 2lb specimen and this year my biggest fish went to 1lb but the best weighed in at about 12oz. The fight it gave made me think I had a much bigger trout on!
